If you watch any HGTV, you probably see a lot of shows based around this question. Here at Beattie Development, we get it a lot too. At what point is it not worth it to your remodel your home? When should you put it up for sale and find something else? Afterall, there has to be a line somewhere.
It’s actually a much more-blurry line than you may think. For some people, it is worth the cost to add on an additional guest bathroom in order to stay in the home they otherwise love. For others, they’d rather move to a larger home than undergo a remodeling project. Every family and every situation is different, but here are a few ideas to keep in mind:
#1 How much do you absolutely love your home? Your emotions will have a lot of say in whether you stay and remodel or move. Do you have found memories in the house? Do you have close relationships with the neighbors? Is it exactly the type of place you pictured growing old in? If not, it may be easier to simply move on. If you love it, Beattie Development’s remodeling experts can make it functional again.
#2 How tight is your budget? Remodeling costs money, and sometimes the cost fluctuates after the initial estimate. If you have a very tight budget, it may be better to use the exact amount as a downpayment for a new home. It will be much less stressful this way, because you know there’s no chance of it changing.
#3 Is the house really the problem? In some cases, the house itself isn’t the real reason you’re unhappy living there. It may be you don’t like the school district you’re in, you don’t get along with the neighbors, or the yard is practically non-existent. If the true reason you’re feeling cramped is any of these, a remodel won’t help and a move is your only real option.
#4 Do you need more room or just more rooms? Many homeowners base their decision to sell on the need for more space. However, a smarter layout that adds one more room but not actual square footage can often help homeowners avoid moving. A spacious three-bedroom home can often be reconfigured and remodeled to have four smaller bedrooms. This allows your family to have a more-efficient layout without needing to leave the current home they love. This can be much less disruptive and expensive than a move, and may solve your problems.
